But I\u2019m here to tell you to NOT stress. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, applying to college is important, but what\u2019s more important is that you stay calm and approach the college application process in an organized, low-stress manner.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Let\u2019s narrow it down with a timeline.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<p>[adthrive-in-post-video-player video-id=&#8221;YlLqi7yh&#8221; upload-date=&#8221;2023-10-04T18:40:06.000Z&#8221; name=&#8221;College Application Tips for High School Seniors&#8221; description=&#8221;TUN sits down with Adam Warren, program director at Appalachian State University\u2019s branch of College Advising Corps, to discuss tips for high school seniors applying to college.&#8221; player-type=&#8221;static&#8221;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:27px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><b><strong>Summer Before Senior Year <\/strong><\/b><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re probably excited to enjoy the last summer before your senior year in high school, but it\u2019s the best time to start researching and visiting colleges that you\u2019re interested in. <\/span><b>College Board<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a great resource when it comes to comparing schools. The website will be your best friend when researching colleges. Another great resource is TUN\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/schools\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">School Analysis Tool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which you can use to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compare a whole host of data for your higher education choices, including: actual annual cost of schools based on different family income levels; post graduation earnings; graduation rate; retention rate; and average debt.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since you will be spending 4+ years at your college, it is crucial that you understand what you\u2019re walking into. But just looking at the school\u2019s website or using comparison tools isn\u2019t enough \u2014 attending open houses for schools you\u2019re seriously interested in is key. When you begin researching and visiting schools, make sure to:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Prepare<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> questions to ask during the open houses. For example, you can ask about the student clubs orthe &nbsp;various programs offered at the school.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If possible, <\/span><b>spend a day or night <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the school you\u2019re interested in. This will give you a glimpse of what attending the school might actually be like. <\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Talk <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with your parents or guardians about your choices. Yes, you are becoming an adult and where you decide to go to school is fully up to you, but in most cases, your parents\/guardians will be the ones who will help you fund your education. Have a talk with them about finances, and see if dorming is an option or if commuting is a better choice. At this point, you might have already begun to exhibit signs of senioritis, but remember to still work hard in your classes because colleges <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> look at your grades from senior year! The key to starting right and staying organized is <\/span><b>giving yourself deadlines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so that you don\u2019t feel overwhelmed. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><b><strong>September-December <\/strong><\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start categorizing schools into <\/span><b>safety<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>good match<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><b>reach<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> schools.<\/span><ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safety schools are schools that you\u2019re confident you\u2019re going to get into (and know that you can afford). You can decide whether a school is a safety by comparing your GPA and SAT test scores. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good match schools are schools that are a good fit for you in terms of both academics and finances. <\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reach schools are schools that are long-shots, but ones you still want to apply to. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schedule an appointment with your guidance counselor and talk about your choices. Your counselor can play a critical role in helping you decide which schools to apply to. After all, it is your counselor&#8217;s job to advise and guide you throughout the application process.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark down all the college application deadlines &#8212; exam dates, financial aid documents due dates, last day to submit recommendations, etc. Setting alerts for deadlines is essential so that you never forget! Aim to get all the applications in before Thanksgiving break, or latest by Christmas break.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start working on your college essay. Many colleges utilize the Common App for admission, and if all of the colleges you apply to use the Common App, you\u2019ll only have to worry about one college essay. But if that\u2019s not the case, you can either tweak your essay for other applications or write new ones accordingly. <\/span><b>When writing your essay, keep these tips in mind:<\/b><ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try to make yours as unique as possible. Analyze the question and really strive to tell a story that\u2019s uniquely yours. Your dream school will definitely notice.<\/span><\/li>\n\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Show<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> your reader instead of just explaining something. Painting a picture will be more engaging.<\/span><\/li>\n\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Write concisely with appropriate college-level vocabulary. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure someone else\u2014&nbsp;maybe a teacher or a family member\u2014&nbsp;looks over your essay. Another set of eyes can pick up things you would not notice at first. <\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember to use spell check and Google (or dictionary) to make sure you\u2019re using and spelling words correctly. You do NOT want to misuse or misspell words in your essay! <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/fafsa-application-financial-aid-steps\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Complete the FAFSA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and CSS.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start asking teachers for letters of recommendation <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as soon as possible<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Make sure you ask someone who knows you personally and can testify to your work ethic and academic capabilities to ensure the best recommendation possible. &nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><b><strong>Winter of Senior Year<\/strong><\/b><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><b><strong>December-March<\/strong><\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By now, the senioritis is in full force, but remember to keep those grades up! Start applying to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/category\/scholarships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scholarships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 the more you apply to, the higher your chance of winning scholarship money. Also, if you haven\u2019t done so, apply to&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/fafsa-application-financial-aid-steps\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FAFSA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!!! <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><b><strong>Spring of Senior Year<\/strong><\/b><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><b><strong>March-May<\/strong><\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve made it through the college application process &#8212; Congratulations! But remember \u2014 it\u2019s not over until it\u2019s (actually) over \u2014 you still have some to-dos left. First, make sure you stay involved in extracurriculars, and keep your grades up. If you are wait-listed, colleges will look at what you have accomplished between the time you applied and the time they announced their decision. Also, if finance is a concern, make sure to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/financial-aid-appeal-letter\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appeal your financial aid package<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and ask for more aid before accepting an offer. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>May 1st is the official decision deadline <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and now you\u2019ve got your pick of schools to choose from. It can be a difficult decision choosing where to go, but remember that it\u2019s <\/span><b>YOUR decision<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You don\u2019t want to look back and realize you didn\u2019t choose the school you wanted because of someone else\u2019s opinion. You\u2019re going to spend four years there so choose one that you feel right about.
