Unfortunately, with increasingly vocal calls against immigration and the Trump administration\u2019s attempted ban in January this year, some international students are questioning if they should risk attending universities in this country. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eastern Michigan University (EMU), like many other universities and colleges around the country, is eager to reassure international students and make it clear that they are still welcome. This fall, international students at EMU witness firsthand its commitment to welcoming them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EMU has installed <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/today.emich.edu\/story\/news\/10390\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">light post banners featuring 108 students<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the university\u2019s international student community around campus <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and on major roadways in Ypsilanti<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Each banner features a select student\u2019s photo and home country, and is paired with another banner bearing the hashtag #YouAreWelcomeHere and the phrase \u201cThat\u2019s True.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21858\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/international-student-banners1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"864\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The university has an enrollment of nearly 1,000 international students who come from 80 different countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The banners reflect EMU\u2019s continuing efforts to support the national campaign to welcome international students. The university joined the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youarewelcomehereusa.org\/read-me\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#YouAreWelcomeHere<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Campaign in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/today.emich.edu\/story\/news\/10337\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">April this year.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The #YouAreWelcomeHere Campaign spread across many campuses in the U.S. and Canada in recent months as a response to the change in political climate in the U.S. The Campaign\u2019s aim is simply to show international students that they are still welcome. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EMU has embraced that message, and is committed to providing resources and common ground for its international students. The university\u2019s #YouAreWelcomeHere video drives home the message.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"You Are Welcome Here at EMU\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w5x9mEy3KaI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EMU\u2019S campaign seems to be yielding particularly positive results. \u201cSo far, reception has been very good,\u201d Walter Kraft, EMU\u2019s Vice President of Communication, told The University Network (TUN). <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kraft adds that many students and members of the campus community have adopted the phrase \u201cYou are welcome here\u201d since the launch of the campaign. \u201cThey are using it as a way to welcome people into our community,\u201d he said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EMU was inspired to join the campaign when university leaders witnessed the positive impact it was having on the campus of Temple University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe idea came from Temple [University] to encourage the students and school community to let international students know that the U.S. is welcoming,\u201d Kraft said. \u201cWe recognized the implications and saw it as an opportunity to expand our international footprint.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EMU joined the campaign, Kraft explains, to show that it is a \u201cwelcoming environment to the international community.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t start it, but we believe in it,\u201d Kraft said. \u201cNow many of us are adopting it and its message.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Universities in the U.S. have long been a preferred destination for many of the world\u2019s brightest students.
