It has won awards for various sustainability efforts three years in a row, starting in 2015 when it <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">received <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asunow.asu.edu\/content\/asu-receives-top-sustainability-awards-arizona-forward\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two first-place Crescordia awards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the Arizona Forward Environmental Excellence Awards, which honor projects focused on improving sustainability in Arizona. Those awards were followed in 2016 by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/magazine.asu.edu\/december-2016\/articles\/sports\/green-victory\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USG NACDA Sustainability Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is given to top athletic departments demonstrating sustainability practices. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, ASU was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asunow.asu.edu\/20170322-asu-earns-best-green-schools-honor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of the eleven winners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asunow.asu.edu\/20170322-asu-earnshttp:\/\/newsroom.usgbc.org\/us-green-building-council-and-the-green-schools-national-network-announce-the-2017-best-of-green-schools-honorees\/best-green-schools-honor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Best of Green Schools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> award, which was given by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerforgreenschools.org\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for Green Schools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/greenschoolsnationalnetwork.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Schools National Network<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to recipients whose organized projects represented some of the most diverse and creative sustainability efforts in the country. Each year, the two organizations team up to honor achievements in environmental work with the hope of building a more eco-friendly nation and education system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cArizona State University continues to raise the bar in sustainability education and leadership,\u201d said Anisa Heming, director of the Center for Green Schools, in a statement. \u201cWe believe that every student across the country should have the opportunity to learn in and from a green school environment, and ASU is making that happen in its community every day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2017 Best of Green Schools award was presented to ASU under the category of higher education. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The award highlighted ASU\u2019s many sustainability programs for middle and high school students, such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tours.asu.edu\/polytechnic\/points-of-pride\/poly-garden\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poly Garden<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which produces locally grown food. Each semester, the Poly Garden leases three garden plots to ASU Preparatory Academy, a K-12 charter school, so its middle and high school students can learn to cultivate the garden. Some of the garden\u2019s produce is donated to a local food bank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen students engage with the entire process of gardening from soil preparation to planting seeds to harvest, it gives them a unique sense of accomplishment and a true understanding of where food really comes from,\u201d said Susan Norton, program manager for University Sustainability Practices and Poly Garden manager, in a statement. \u201cIt generates firsthand respect for our entire food system<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The award also highlighted the university\u2019s two sustainability education programs aimed at K-12 teachers: \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Sustainability Science Education program and the Sustainability Teacher\u2019s Academy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/sse.asu.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sustainability Science Education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> program is based in Arizona State University\u2019s Biodesign Institute. The program, which launched in 2011, was based on the theory that \u201cin <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">order to achieve a sustainable future, educators must systematically teach sustainability topics, problems, solutions, and divergent thinking in their classrooms at the elementary and middle school levels.\u201d The project provides \u201cconstructive style teaching methods\u201d and other technology resources to encompass the desired goal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"ASU&#039;s School of Sustainability\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gHmFXZMqO8Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sustainability.asu.edu\/sustainabilitysolutions\/programs\/teachersacademy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sustainability Teacher\u2019s Academy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> works to equip teachers with a curriculum, designed by a select group of sustainability researchers, to provide educators with first-hand assistance and knowledge in sustainability and environmental issues. The program\u2019s core goal is to create conversation with young people about the growing issue of sustainability and to encourage involvement in their communities and schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caysy Solis, a recent graduate of Arizona State University and downtown campus resident, believes that attending a school that places an emphasis on solving sustainability-related issues, is very important. \u201cI did not know about ASU\u2019s sustainability efforts when I first chose to attend the university,\u201d she said. \u201cHowever, when I got there and learned about their efforts, I appreciated it. Their work allows students to reflect on how wasteful they can be, and how they could preserve resources. And it definitely makes an impact,\u201d Solis added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Education is key to sustainability, and ASU is certainly doing its part to ensure that its students and community learn to reduce their carbon footprint. \u201cWith a collaborative effort we can reach so many more students and in turn see meaningful behavior change,\u201d said Norton.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Arizona State University (ASU) is rapidly gaining a reputation for its strong commitment to sustainability practices.
