{"id":20204,"date":"2017-06-01T16:37:30","date_gmt":"2017-06-01T20:37:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/?p=20204"},"modified":"2019-03-12T10:57:08","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T14:57:08","slug":"trump-paris-accord-implications-university-climate-research-activism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/trump-paris-accord-implications-university-climate-research-activism\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump Pulls Out of the Paris Accord: What Does This Mean for University Climate Research and Activism?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After much controversy and speculation, President Trump has decided to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris climate agreement, as of today June 1, 2017. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an announcement, Trump stated that he decided to withdraw from the agreement because he deemed it unfair to the U.S., but he indicated that he would be willing to negotiate a new deal. \u201cI was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris,\u201d Trump said. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We&#8217;re getting out. And we will start to renegotiate and we&#8217;ll see if there&#8217;s a better deal. If we can, great. If we can&#8217;t, that&#8217;s fine,&#8221; he added. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The agreement is a massive redistribution of U.S. wealth to other countries,\u201d said Trump. It is \u201cless about the climate and more about other countries gaining a financial advantage over the U.S.,\u201d Trump proclaimed. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/unfccc.int\/paris_agreement\/items\/9485.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paris Agreement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was signed by 195 countries on April 22, 2016 (Earth Day) in an effort to \u201cstrengthen the global response to the threat of climate change.\u201d It is an agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and was created to innovate ways to limit greenhouse gas emissions on a global scale. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. emits 15 percent of the world\u2019s carbon dioxide, making it the second biggest greenhouse gas emitter in the world. Now, the U.S. joins Syria and Nicaragua as the only countries that will NOT join the Paris Agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obama used an Executive Order to sign on to the agreement in 2016, which is why Trump has the power to make his decision without approval from the Senate. After signing on, Obama called it \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/06\/01\/politics\/paris-climate-agreement-trump-ways-to-withdraw\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the best chance we have<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d to save the planet. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>President Trump\u2019s cabinet was split on the decision. White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon and Chief Strategist and EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt were two of the cabinet members pushing Trump towards a decision to exit the Paris Agreement. They argued that the agreement is harmful to the U.S. economy.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elon Musk, Tesla CEO and member of Trump\u2019s Strategic and Policy Forum, was one of the most avid opponents of leaving the Paris Agreement. Musk <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/869970236669177856?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&amp;amp;ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Ffortune.com%2F2017%2F05%2F31%2Felon-musk-donald-trump-advisory-council-paris-agreement%2F\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted just yesterday<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cDon&#8217;t know which way Paris will go, but I&#8217;ve done all I can to advise directly to POTUS, through others in WH &amp; via councils, that we remain.\u201d He also tweeted that he will \u201chave no choice but to depart councils\u201d if Trump decides to pull out of the agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Don&#8217;t know which way Paris will go, but I&#8217;ve done all I can to advise directly to POTUS, through others in WH &amp; via councils, that we remain<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/869970236669177856\">May 31, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20207\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/response.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"567\" height=\"186\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b>What does this mean for University Research Efforts Aimed at Reversing Climate Change?<\/b><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A substantial amount of environmental sustainability research and technology growth takes place on college campuses. Professors, students, and researchers help lead the charge to achieve our goal of sustainability. So TUN spoke with Kathleen Merrigan, executive director of sustainability at George Washington University and former U.S. deputy secretary and chief operating officer of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, to gain insight on the impact of a U.S. withdrawal from the agreement on environmentalists\u2019 efforts towards sustainability on college campuses. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cClearly, it\u2019s a setback,\u201d Merrigan told TUN. \u201cThis decision puts us out of step with the world. We are no longer a leader. Seems we can\u2019t even follow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Merrigan is concerned for the environment. \u201cThis decision, coupled with the President\u2019s budget proposal, suggests that we should anticipate severely reduced budgets for research related to climate change across the federal government,\u201d said Merrigan. She is also worried that \u201cthis decision will discourage young people from public service, further erode confidence in government, and inflame cynicism.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b>University Climate Researchers and Activists will need to Fight Harder and Look for Other Ways to Fund Research.<\/b><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This detrimental blow has the potential to spark a strong resistance movement on college campuses and by environmentalists everywhere. \u201cWe have no choice but to fight back with everything we have,\u201d Merrigan said. \u201cTo state the obvious, the planet depends on it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it may be a setback, researchers and activists who fight climate change will have to adjust their strategies. \u201cEnvironmentalists may shift more attention to state and municipal government as solution centers for climate for the duration of this Administration,\u201d said Merrigan. <\/span>\u201c<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t anticipate that this decision will impact university operations,<\/span>\u201d<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Merrigan told TUN. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>The science on climate is clear, irrefutable, and compelling. Colleges and universities will continue to reduce their carbon footprint. Our students demand nothing less.<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With so many advocacy, research and development efforts aimed at reversing climate change taking place on college campuses throughout the U.S., Trump\u2019s decision will likely not be a death knell for such efforts. As noted in an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/renewable-energy-college-campuses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">earlier article on TUN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the renewable energy industry is growing in part thanks to the higher education institutions that have joined and spearheaded the movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUniversity campuses are in an excellent position to make renewable microgrids, since they often have their own electric substations, especially at engineering schools,\u201d said Timothy Corrigan, a renewable energy expert and senior power systems engineer at TRC Companies, Inc., in an earlier interview with TUN. Corrigan also notes that universities provide great test cases in that \u201ctheir scale \u2013 somewhere between a large commercial building and a city \u2013 makes them an excellent platform for testing out the technologies that are needed when you go beyond 30 or 40% renewable power penetration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyday, more and more universities are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/category\/news\/sustainable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">joining the fight to protect the environment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by reducing their carbon footprint and forging ahead with research and development on sustainability and technology that will help save the environment. So while Trump\u2019s decision to pull out of the Paris Agreement may be a setback for reversing climate change, it shouldn\u2019t stop the momentum taking place at universities today.
