Now that you\u2019ve received hundreds of applications, how do you sort through them all? Moreover, how do you ensure that you pick the right candidates? <\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b>REVIEWING APPLICATIONS<\/b><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you start reviewing the applications, you should first establish a <\/span><b>criteria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for assessing the applicants. What are the most important factors &#8211; skills, determination\/passion, availability? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, create a <\/span><b>rating system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that you and your team can agree on. This is especially helpful when there are multiple people reviewing the same (or different) sets of applications. Uniformity is key! \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><b>As you\u2019re reviewing the applications, ask yourself these questions about each applicant:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does the applicant come across as professional?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are there errors, grammatical, spelling and otherwise, in the cover letter or resume?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does the applicant sound confident or entitled? Passionate or desperate?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you need this candidate for the job more than he\/she needs <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> job?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does the applicant possess actual, useful skills that you\u2019re looking for? (Microsoft and Excel are the bare minimum!)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did the applicant use the keywords that you used in your job description and title?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the \u201cCommand + F\u201d search tool to check!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did the applicant provide all the information that you asked for (and more)?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After reading (or skimming) through each application, give it a rating. Some applications will be easy to discard (e.g., the ones that are unprofessional or ridden with errors). The remaining ones must be carefully and precisely rated, so it will be easier for you to choose a few for interviews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-20545\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Reviewing-Applications-How-to-Spot-the-Right-Candidates-410x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"410\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><b>Here are some good and bad signs to detect from the applications: <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2714\ufe0f <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applicant is eager to work for your company, and demonstrates good understanding of what you\u2019re looking for.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applicant has the skill set and experiences that you are looking for.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applicant is willing to learn and take on challenges.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u26d4\ufe0f<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Application\/\u201dobjective\u201d is very general and NOT tailored to the position.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keywords are nowhere to be found.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applicant puts too much focus on what the company and the experience can do for him\/her rather than highlighting the ways in which he\/she could contribute to the company.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve rated all the applications using the above standards, it\u2019s time to pick x candidates from the pool of qualified candidates. Contact the highest-rated applicants first (perhaps those who got a rating of 9.5 or higher?). If, for any reason, you are not able to move forward with them, you can contact the next pool of qualified candidates (maybe those with a rating between 9 and 9.5?). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do this until you have enough candidates scheduled for interviews.
