{"id":18649,"date":"2017-04-03T16:42:22","date_gmt":"2017-04-03T20:42:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/?p=18649"},"modified":"2021-05-21T07:39:23","modified_gmt":"2021-05-21T11:39:23","slug":"cuny-school-of-journalism-news-integrity-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/cuny-school-of-journalism-news-integrity-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"CUNY School of Journalism to Head Global News Integrity Initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent surveys show an erosion of public trust in the media; a significant portion of the American population does not trust the media. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/poll.qu.edu\/national\/release-detail?ReleaseID=2431\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quinnipiac University poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 52 percent of voters trusted the media more to &#8220;tell [them] the truth about important issues,&#8221; compared to 37 percent who trusted President Donald Trump more than the media. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/static.politico.com\/39\/51\/79db278d40d1a48e50747d74b48a\/170217-fox-news-media-poll.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fox News poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 45 percent trusted the Trump administration to tell the public the truth, compared to 42 percent who trusted the reporters covering the administration. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of trust in the media is understandable in the wake of a highly polarized election, fake news or hoaxes on social media, and the constant barrage of accusations by Trump of mainstream media as peddling \u201cfake news\u201d or treating him \u201cunfairly,\u201d and attacking targeted media, like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New York Times<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as \u201cfailing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">It is the same Fake News Media that said there is &#8220;no path to victory for Trump&#8221; that is now pushing the phony Russia story. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/847056211006631936\">March 29, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the current socio-political climate, is it possible to restore the public\u2019s trust in the media? Can the public be educated to spot, and not trust or pass on, \u201cfake news\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b>The News Integrity Initiative<\/b><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are questions that will be answered by a new initiative headed by the City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism (CUNY J-School) and its partners. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CUNY <a href=\"https:\/\/www.journalism.cuny.edu\/2017\/04\/announcing-the-new-integrity-initiative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">today<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that a global consortium of tech leaders, academic institutions, non-profit and others in the news trade are launching the <\/span>News Integrity Initiative<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The News Integrity Initiative is committed to educating the public about the news they read and share online, increasing trust in journalism worldwide, and improving the ways in which journalists report and inform the public. Participants in the Initiative will conduct research, engage in special projects, and meet with industry experts.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b>Function &amp; role<\/b><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The News Integrity Initiative will be managed independently by the CUNY J-School under the guidance of the School\u2019s Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism and its director Professor Jeff Jarvis. CUNY J-School will coordinate all the activities of the News Integrity Initiative, including research, special projects and events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The News Integrity Initiative will hire a general manager, who will report directly to dean of the CUNY J-School Sarah Bartlett. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBy locating the News Integrity Initiative at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, our faculty and students will have a unique opportunity to engage with researchers and technologists, attend events and conduct experiments aimed at building greater trust in our profession,\u201d Bartlett said in a statement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s hard to think of a more important role for a public graduate school of journalism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dan Gillmor, author and professor at Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, emphasizes that the change must come from the journalists themselves. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cToday\u2019s announcement sends a strong signal that news literacy matters. We can\u2019t upgrade only just the supply of news. We need to upgrade ourselves, to become better, more active media users, as consumers and creators,\u201d Gillmor said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b>Funders<\/b><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook is a key funder of the $14 million News Integrity Initiative. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company found itself in the middle of a \u201cfake news\u201d controversy during last year\u2019s heated election and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/zuck\/posts\/10103269806149061\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">took action<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to combat misinformation, including the introduction of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/facebook-filter-fake-news-support-journalism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook Journalism Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Campbell Brown, Facebook\u2019s Head of News Partnerships, explained the company\u2019s role in the News Integrity Initiative. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs part of the Facebook Journalism Project, we want to give people the tools necessary to be discerning about the information they see online,\u201d Brown said in a statement. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improving news literacy is a global concern, and this diverse group assembled by CUNY brings together experts from around the world to work toward building more informed communities.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other contributors to the initial funds are the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Craig Newmark Philanthropic Fund, the Ford Foundation, the Democracy Fund, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Tow Foundation, AppNexus, Mozilla and Betaworks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist and the Craig Newmark Philanthropic Fund, spoke of the importance of trustworthy news. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn high school U.S. history, I learned that a trustworthy press is the immune system of democracy,\u201d Newmark said in a statement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs a news consumer, like most folks, I want news we can trust. That means standing up for trustworthy news media and learning how to spot clickbait and deceptive news.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b>Participants<\/b><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New Integrity Initiative currently has 19 participants from around the globe:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arizona State University in the U.S.;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for Community and Ethnic Media at CUNY Graduate School of Journalism in the U.S.;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constructive Institute at Aarhus University in Denmark;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edelman based in the U.S.;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Journalism Centre in the Netherlands;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fundaci\u00f3n Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez para el Nuevo Periodismo Iberoamericano (FNPI) based in Colombia;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hamburg Media School in Germany;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hans-Bredow-Institut in Germany;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ida B. Wells Society in the U.S.;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Center for Journalists based in the U.S.;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">News Literacy Project based in the U.S.;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polis, London School of Economics in the U.K.;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecole de Journalisme de Sciences Po (Sciences Po Journalism School) in France;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Society of Publishers in Asia based in Hong Kong;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trust Project based in the U.S.;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walkley Foundation in Australia;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weber Shandwick based in the U.S.;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wikipedia Founder Jimmy Wales; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Division for Freedom of Expression and Media Development headquartered in France.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These participants will be involved in fostering communication, hosting events, and presenting relevant research and projects for potential funding to the News Integrity Initiative. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Funding will be managed by the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism Foundation, Inc., which will support CUNY J-School.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The News Integrity Initiative will be searching for additional funders and participants to meet its goals.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recent surveys show an erosion of public trust in the media; a significant portion of the American population does not trust the media.
