The friendly annual competition starts in the spring,\u00a0this year\u2019s spanning from February 5 &#8211; April 1. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, for 17 years, this green competition has co-existed with college basketball\u2019s March Madness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b>There is a scoreboard and even a trophy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! <\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the competition, the participating schools report on their weekly recycling\/trash volumes and are ranked in various categories based on their recycling efforts. With each week\u2019s updated ranking, participating schools follow their performance against other colleges and use the results to rally their campus to reduce and recycle more. At the end of each week, new rankings are posted based on the data reported by schools. Participants and their fans can monitor the competition with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recyclemaniacs.org\/scoreboard\/current-results\">online scoreboard<\/a>. Winning schools receive an award made out of recyclable materials, and win the right to host that category\u2019s special traveling trophy for the coming year. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b>The competition is on!<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The competition features multiple categories that competing schools can ultimately win. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s too early to name a winner based on the third week&#8217;s reporting, but while University of Missouri\u2013Kansas City may rank 4th in the today\u2019s Western Athletic Men\u2019s basketball conference standings, they currently lead nationally in the \u201cDiversion\u201d category competition with nearly an 84% recycling rate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schools can also participate in a \u201cGame Day\u201d competition, where colleges compare their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recycling and waste minimization efforts made during a single home basketball game during the 8-week period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, Loyola University of Chicago won the Game Day competition with a 94% diversion rate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Villanova University, last year\u2019s men\u2019s basketball national champions, is participating in the new\u00a0&#8220;Race to Zero Waste&#8221; category that Recycle Mania has introduced. On February 24, the university attempted to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">divert 90% or more of waste from their trash by recycling or composting during that day\u2019s home game. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe actually reached our goal exactly,\u201d said Richard Laudenslager, the Recycling coordinator for Villanova.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b>A contest with real impact<\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since Recycle Mania\u2019s inception, millions of students from over 1,000 universities have recycled and composted roughly 730 million pounds of material, thereby preventing the release of nearly 1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (equivalent to removing 7 million cars from the road for one year).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The annual competition hopes to expand every year and while only one school can win the March Madness, thanks to Recycle mania, everyone can be a winner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more information, go to <a href=\"http:\/\/recyclemaniacs.org\/\">Recyclemania.org<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While March Madness, College Basketball\u2019s biggest tournament,\u00a0is still about a week away, another competition is already heating up at many colleges across North America. &#8220;Recycle Mania&#8221; is a green movement, started in 2001, where colleges compete against each other in an effort to promote recycling and waste reduction.
