{"id":15360,"date":"2017-01-03T11:04:33","date_gmt":"2017-01-03T16:04:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/?p=15360"},"modified":"2019-03-12T14:53:33","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T18:53:33","slug":"university-of-washington-campus-homeless-campers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/university-of-washington-campus-homeless-campers\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Washington\u2019s Campus Becomes New Home for Homeless Campers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The University of Washington (UW) in Seattle, WA is home to many things, but will soon add a new group of individuals to its campus&#8211;homeless campers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Dec. 17, Tent City 3 (TC3), a group of about 100 homeless campers, begun their 90-day stay at the university\u2019s campus at the corner of Brooklyn Avenue NE and Northeast Pacific Street, adjacent to the Fishery Sciences\/Marine Studies building. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TC3 is an authorized encampment operated by the Seattle Housing and Resource Effort (SHARE) and WHEEL (Women&#8217;s Housing, Equality and Enhancement League), <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/seattle-news\/education\/uw-president-campus-to-host-homeless-encampment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the Seattle Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The goal of both organizations is to inform the community about homeless people and help make their life on the streets a much easier one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Over 1,000 people attended town hall style meetings and sent in emails to university officials, urging to let the campus reside on campus.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In June of this year, President Ana Mari Cauce <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washington.edu\/president\/2016\/06\/08\/uw-to-host-tent-city-3-for-90-days-in-winter-2017\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced that the university would be moving forward with plans to host TC3 on campus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur educational mission and role as a public university call us to find innovative ways to teach, learn and serve. It is my firm belief as a teacher, a scholar who has studied these issues, and a citizen of our community that hosting Tent City 3 is wholly consistent with our mission,\u201d Cauce said in a press release.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There will be no tuition or taxpayer funds used for the campers, though participation and interaction with the campers by staff, faculty and students is encouraged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concerns about safety, parking and more are being put into consideration as the campers move to campus, according to Cauce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI recognize some of you may still have concerns and trepidation. That is fair and expected. I only ask that we approach hosting with open minds and take this opportunity to learn from the experiences of our neighbors,\u201d Cauce said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TC3 has strict rules for its residents. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.king5.com\/news\/local\/homeless\/homeless-campers-move-to-uw-campus-1\/371123249\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to king5.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there is no alcohol, drugs, open fires, or violence allowed. Sex offenders are not allowed at the tent city, either. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of TC3\u2019s residents are required to participate in a one night probationary period before being allowed to stay in the main camp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though hosted by UW, the move was also organized by the Tent City Collective, an organization made up of UW students, alumni, and TC3 residents, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyuw.com\/news\/article_73f1b696-bcf8-11e6-a162-87b2136885f4.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dailyuw.com. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The organization helps arrange many eager individuals, nonprofits and local governments to help out families and single people while they\u2019re facing the trials of homelessness. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, Tent City Collective has begun a fundraiser for the move, trying to gather up donations for moving costs, as well as for expenses like permitting fees. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Washington (UW) in Seattle, WA is home to many things, but will soon add a new group of individuals to its campus&#8211;homeless campers.
