Since 2007, Texas A&amp;M has produced more than 50 menu items for astronauts at the International Space Station and throughout NASA\u2019s spacelift program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Aggies Nourish Our Astronauts\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QUi-OuYAC7E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In this video, Texas A&amp;M\u2019 chancellor John Sharp met with food scientist Brian O\u2019Neill and a former astronaut and current Texas A&amp;M professor Dr. Dunbar at the Space Food Research Facility, for a food sampling. \u201cI\u2019ll bet you most Aggies and most Texans, frankly, don\u2019t realize that the food that is consumed in space including at the International Space Station right now is made right here at the west campus at Texas A&amp;M University,\u201d said Sharp.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food Scientists like O\u2019Neil make sure that the food pouches or MREs (Meal Ready to Eat) that the astronauts eat have a very long shelf life. After prepping the food and heat-sealing the pouch, the scientists use a retort (heat) process to sterilize the inside of the pouch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This facility is vital for NASA and its astronauts because there aren\u2019t many facilities capable of creating thermostabilized food. This Thanksgiving, astronauts will be able to enjoy\u00a0sliced turkey, candied yams, apricot cobbler, and more. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Dunbar explained how the food is consumed and praised the dishes. \u201cWhat we normally do is stick this packet into the galley oven, heat it up, and we have a little hot Turkey,\u201d she said. \u201cThe meats are really great.
