Whether you are a confused\/clueless (aka undeclared) freshman\/sophomore in college, a declared communications major, or a college grad with a communications degree, you’ve probably asked yourself or had at least one person<\/em> ask you this question:<\/span><\/p>\n

“… WHAT EXACTLY IS<\/span><\/em> COMMUNICATIONS (MAJOR)?”<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

And you probably hated yourself for saying,<\/span><\/p>\n

Trust me, you\u2019re not alone.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The question is a tough one to answer —\u00a0it\u2019s like asking a teenager who\u2019s going through an identity crisis what they want to be when they grow up, or a jobless senior in college what they plan to do after they graduate.<\/span><\/p>\n

But what\u2019s even more annoying are these seemingly belittling questions and\/or comments:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

That\u2019s why I only have 3 papers and 200 pages of reading due tomorrow.<\/span><\/p>\n

What IS<\/em> communications (as an academic discipline) and what CAN<\/em> you do with a communications degree?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Well, that\u2019s exactly<\/em> what we\u2019re going to answer right here and now, so that we can properly explain and defend ourselves (and our major) instead of face-palming whenever we\u2019re asked this question.<\/span><\/p>\n
