Whether coming from a late class, long club meeting, or just studying at the library, it is important to be aware of the many ways to stay safe on campus at night.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Be aware<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid walking alone in unlit areas. If possible, walk on lit sidewalks and pathways. Don\u2019t have headphones or earbuds in, as music can distract from hearing an individual or a group approaching from behind.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Use campus resources<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many campuses offer an escort service managed by campus safety or police. Often times, escorts are volunteer students who\u00a0currently attend the school, and are available to walk to and from destinations during the late night or early morning hours. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Knowing the phone number of campus safety is helpful as well. Saving the number on speed dial where it can be easily assessable can make all the difference.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be familiar with the location of emergency phone box stations which can be\u00a0found at most schools. These stations are typically lit up with a blue light and will alert the police of an incident if a button inside of the box is pushed. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Make a friend, or friends<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When coming from an activity, class, or just studying, chances are, other people are walking alone as well. Ask to walk with them. It can be daunting, but most likely, they\u2019ll agree. A friendship could potentially grow from just this simple action. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within established friend groups, message one or two to see if<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they are available or free<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sk them if they\u2019re willing to meet <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> halfway or at the location, just to make sure everything\u2019s alright. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try going to club activities or studying with friends if possible<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hat way, there\u2019s no need to call a friend when uneasy or nervous about walking at night. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try going to club activities or studying with friends if possible because that way, there\u2019s no need to call a friend when uneasy or nervous about walking at night. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>App for that<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smartphones\u2019 app stores have a variety of campus safety apps that can be used when alone at night. Apps such as LiveSafe, SafeTrek, or Campus Safe have a variety of options and features to make nighttime walking a bit safer. Play around with the numerous apps available to determine which is most useful. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These tips are just the beginning. Staying safe on campus requires one to be diligent. College is a new and exciting experience.
