{"id":11489,"date":"2016-09-29T10:16:04","date_gmt":"2016-09-29T14:16:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/?p=11489"},"modified":"2020-06-30T18:58:14","modified_gmt":"2020-06-30T22:58:14","slug":"stem-and-liberal-arts-the-pros-and-cons-of-both-degrees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/stem-and-liberal-arts-the-pros-and-cons-of-both-degrees\/","title":{"rendered":"STEM and Liberal Arts: Pros and Cons of Both Degrees"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>*Updated June 30, 2020<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With science and technology driving the future, many teachers are motivating their students to succeed in their science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) classes.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STEM has seen an increasing amount of attention in recent years. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though many colleges haven\u2019t seen the kind of art and music budget cuts that plague the public school system, liberal arts majors are often encouraged to choose a minor or a fall-back job in a STEM field, in case their career as a writer or an artist doesn\u2019t work out.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liberal arts majors have just as bright a future as STEM majors do, despite what many reports would have an individual believe. Both majors have their pros and cons.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/pin\/520165825697459297\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Stem-vs.-Liberal-Arts-410x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17688\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pros and cons of<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b> liberal arts <\/b><\/span>majors<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aacu.org\/sites\/default\/files\/files\/LEAP\/nchems.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AACU), 80 percent of employees agree that all students, regardless of their major, should acquire knowledge in the liberal arts and sciences. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skills like critical thinking, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/employers-test-for-emotional-intelligence-job-interviews\/\">emotional intelligence<\/a> and other soft skills are invaluable to many employers.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s also the myth that liberal arts majors will make close to nothing once they graduate, while every STEM major will be rolling in the dough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it is true that liberal arts majors generally do not make as much as their STEM counterparts right out of college, liberal arts graduates earn $2,000 more than their STEM counterparts at their peak earning ages (56-60), according to the AACU. Additionally, they make nearly $40,000 more at their peak earning ages (56-60) than they did directly out of college (21-25). <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><b>Pros and cons of STEM majors<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for STEM, while there are <a href=\"http:\/\/money.com\/money\/4254817\/college-matters-stem-majors\/\">some colleges<\/a>, such as Alverno College in Wisconsin, where STEM majors only earn around $35,000, STEM majors make a lot of money for the most part.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/stem-majors-earn-a-lot-more-money-after-graduation-2014-7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Department of Education said that STEM majors on average earn $65,000 after graduation. They were also more likely to have just one full-time job, instead of a part-time job, or even multiple jobs. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the U.S. Census Bureau <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/mlr\/2015\/article\/stem-crisis-or-stem-surplus-yes-and-yes.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that in 2014, 74 percent of individuals who have a bachelor\u2019s degree in a STEM major weren\u2019t employed in the STEM field. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both liberal arts and STEM majors have their pros and cons.
